Being such a melodic contemporary hymn, In Christ Alone works really well with keyboard and melody instruments. But often in song books or other printed music, the keys parts leave you wanting more – they’re the same for each verse, but the lyric cries out for variation between and within the verses because there’s a huge dynamic to the lyrics.
I was commissioned to arrange music, including In Christ Alone, for a friend’s wedding, so I took the opportunity to write varied parts. Starting with a new melody for the intro, link and outro, and starting on the piano, the arrangement grew to include strings, bass, guitar and clarinet. I revisited the arrangement on a couple of occasions, adding in options for other instruments. I love that this arrangement works for lots of combinations of instruments – from piano + guitar, up to piano + guitar + drums + bass + organ + string quartet + clarinet + kitchen sink! [Daren]
* The keyboard parts aren’t intended to be used together with a string quartet or organ: they’re different from the string quartet and organ parts.
